Continental Mtn Kings.
« on: May 01, 2009, 06:41:58 PM »
part 1 Well, got my 2 Conti MT kings today to try.. of course it's going to rain for the next week plus :(

Did mount them up though.. I was actually scared because I ordered two 2.2's but found out that they only had one so I took a 2.4. Wasn't sure if it was going to fit on my frame or not. Well if you have read around the web about them you'll know everyone claims the tires are small for the stated size. They ARE NOT exaggerating!! the 2.2 I monted on the rear... well, it looks like one of those cars the  kids these days are all building with the dental floss tires.  this thing is not only thin, but short!! the 2.4 looks like a normal 2.0-2 tire.

other things I noticed without even riding.. the tire is round.. I mean ROUND!! most MT tires have shorter knobs in the center with growing taller as they move out to the side walls. making the tire almost appear flat. not these, they are round. still undecided if this is good or bad.  I have a feeling in muddy conditions this would be good. possibly better cornering also? will have to wait and see.

Side walls seem really strong. I have read a few posts about them being weak but I can't see that.. much thicker than any 29er tire I have tried yet, but not all that heavy.

I did do a quick misty mile up and down my driveway (it's a long dirt drive) and got to say the things are grippy. with some roll resistance but not terrible, the Kenda Klaws are worse.  I do have them pumped up pretty heavy right now ( I always over pump the first night when reusing Slime tubes so any old punctures fill up nice, tires are usually flat in the morning.. pump them back up and never need air again, till I pull them again anyway)

well I'll write more when the rain stops... stay tuned

You're not going to "Stans" them I hope  I read a few articles about the mountain kings and the race kings, people seem to like them and the rolling resistance is'nt supposed to be bad. I'll wait for your review before thinking about shelling out the dough though :halo:

Part 2, First impressions Well I got out a bit today in between the rain drops.. actually the sun came out.  these tires are SUPER GRIPPY!!  Take on wet roots and leaves with a vengeance!!  hit a few root at an angle just to see, no side kick/slide like normal tires. They just rolled right on over.  I have to say I had more confidence banking in corners at speed than with any tire I have tested to date.  Most tires I get up on the edge of the side wall and they start to slide out.  Not these, even on wet-ish leaf cover. one funny thing i did notice was the tires actually skewered the leaves. So after a time of pushing it there was a round leaf cover.. kinda funny.  Not "loaded" tread, but just a line of them. very strange, and fun and noisy!! ^-^ :o

good mud tire. I hit a normally squirrelly area and these didn't shimmy at all!!

on the down side.. well there is a LOT of roll resistance!!  I mean a LOT!!  area's I normally coast through I had to pedal.  Some could have been the soil after the heavy rains last night.  I'm going to give them a few more tries before I make the final post.

part 3, Final Impression. Well, I rode these things around a good bit. and I got to say they are probably the best gripping tire that I have ever ridden on, with a few exceptions.
I wouldn't use them on rocky/ledge rides. though they never slipped out or anything the minute I got onto the ledge rock at both Bluff Point and Rocky Neck they gave me a very squirrely feel. Actually the first time I hit a section of ledge I stopped and got off the bike because I thought I hadn't tightened the Quick releases enough and that my tires were coming off.! ??? Kinda strange because even on hard pack I never got that feeling.
The roll resistance is another issue with these tires. It's kinda high. When riding along basically flat terrain beside my friends while on my 29er with them on their regular 26 inch wheels I could usually kinda coast along beside them while they had to pedal pretty much constantly. With the MT Kings I was pedaling just as much, if not more to keep rolling. As to the size issue, they are small, but they do stretch out a bit over time, but not enough to recover the difference to other brands sizes.
Again I can't say enough about how good a grip on most terrain conditions these things had. You will be hard pressed to find an area where you can get the rear tire to spin out while climbing the up hills. They roll over logs with almost no slide out that you normally get with every other tire I have tried. I did try riding them a bit on pavement just to see if I could tear off a lug or two, No such luck. Though they did wear a good bit in the 10 or so miles I put on them on pavement not one lug is gone. Damn good for a wide spaced lug dirt tire on pavement.
Another good thing about them is that they are pretty light and very strong. The side walls have a nice thread pattern that at first I just though was the normal structure like any other tires side wall, they had just moved it out so you could see it.  But I have swiped many a rock and pinched them in many a stone wall and nothing more than a scratch to show for it.

but , the big question(s) .....

Will I keep them on?... well, No only because I love riding the cliff rock (but they may go back on for snow season, I have a feeling they are going to be the best non-studded tire out there for winter)
(updated 5/2010)
Well, after trying other tires I always seem to come back to the kings, they just grip everywhere!! and after a bit of road rides on them do to a back injury, the rear knobs have worn down a tad and no more squirrel effect...!!!  ;D  they are pretty much my every day tire now. The bit of resistance quickly is over run by the ability to ride a tad faster and not slip out. Climb hills without wheel spin, grip is good!!  :cheesy:

Would I recommend them...?  Yes.. if you're not terribly worried about roll resist, and you're not riding cliff rock. For XC, well, ahhh not the best tire, for people who are a bit more aggressive, probably the perfect tire.

Latest update.. SNOW riding

after a few rides in some pretty heavy snow, I have to say these are the BEST snow tire I have ever ridden on, NOT and ice tire (unless you do the home made studs thing  :undecided:)  but for sure the best tire in snow!  ;D

used to like the Kenda Klaws, but for one they are discontinued and 2 they didn't have great lateral stability (they's slide sideways ) Not the Kings!!, I had a hard time getting them to slip at all.  Few pretty steep hills I thought I'd be hike-a-biking, but no.  Kings got me up and with almost no slippage!!!
