RBW: Nice morning
« on: May 12, 2009, 08:41:48 AM »
Road before work this morning.  It was nice but the bike still isn't working right.  Took it in for a tune up and the LBS didn't fix the problem.  The problem being that when ever I put pressure on a particular gear, like climbing, it jumps out.  Only gears it will stay engaged in are the outer and inner most gears.

Anyone know what could be wrong?  I am taking it back to the shop today and telling them they have to fix it right this time.

cable adj..  if it's skipping down you need to tighten.. skipping up, loosen.(that's skipping up or down the cassette, not the "gear ratio")
you are talking a multi gear? not one of the SS?

you'll almost ALWAYS have to do some minor Adj after a shop does becasue the derailleur reacts slightly to the pressures of riding and the tech can't/don't usually adj under pressure.. they almost always speed shift it up and down the rack while on the stand. It hard for them becasue most bikes don't "fit" them to ride so they can "pressure test" you bike.  if you mech is my size. (5'8") he's not going to pedal around on your monster bike being that you tall ass has the seat almost up to his head....  :o  ^-^ ;D

best way to adj is to put on a stand (or flip over) put in middle rings both front and back.  spin cranks at medium slow speed and turn the cable adjuster.. bring all the way up so you hear the chain clicking on the next gear up.  then count as you spin down to where it almost drops onto the lower gear. bring it back half way and try riding it.. shift under pressure.. I find I usually have to give it 1/4 turn tighter with Shimano and about 1/2 with Sram systems when riding with pressure is on the system, over what it does in the stand..

if you do it this way you can get the thing to shift while climbing and you'll get much less chain "clank" that you always hear when people try to down shift when in a major climb.

if it still happens you have one of three things wrong...

bent derailleur hanger (most likely)
Bent/kinked/bad cable
bent derailleur cage

worn out chain?
worn out cassette?

One other thing that can cause this is a bent axle.. but you'll usually notice the wheel is wobbling bad or is way out from being straight in the frame.  but it can cause the cassette to pitch out of angle to everything... this is very unlikely though unless you've been hitting some drops or something. :o

I took it in and hopefully they'll fix it and it won't cost too much.  This is my geared bike.  Single speeds are sooooo much easier.

ya.. till ya hit that massive hill.. and I pop her into grannie and spin my butt up while you're walking     ???

Like I said though.. if you have issues after they tune it just do the adj barrel thing .. it works even better if you have a loooonnnggg area where you can be riding and spin the barrel while your on the bike....  just look up a LOT!!! :undecided:

Just heard back from the LBS ... broken freehub body!  Seeing if I can get a replacement.  Unfortunately all the specs that I have found only list the hub as Alloy 32h.  Plan B, is to use a Bomblast Wheel that I have had sitting around.  Of course my wheelset won't be a set anymore and it will make the bike heavier.  I put some queries out to the Interwebs to see if I can find out what I need.

I got the bike in 2007, so that would make it at least 2 yrs old.

I am going to assume that you mean the body which the cassette sits on? Shimano freehubs usually are the universal ones that fit pretty much everything.. even if it isn't a shimano hub. Its a pretty easy replacement with a 10 or 12 mm allen key.

Yes, the Cassette Body.  Hmmm, does this mean my LBS is inept?  I am going to talk to him tomorrow and see what's what.  Probably just get the bike back and see what I can find on my own.  The hubs are King Kong Hubs.  Ever hear of them?
