Scraping sound?
« on: May 31, 2009, 07:16:38 PM »
Ok so I was riding at GR today about noonish and was going through No Trespassing and as I was climbing I heard a pop and this annoying scraping sound comng from my rear shock and I have no clue what is wrong with it now, it holds air with no  problem it just makes this god awful sound now any ideas what it could be or should I bring it to the LBS and let have a look at it. I lubed all the bushings and bearings and still have that sound.

Nope between the honey do list and work and night school and Satruday school and now the rain I haven't gotten to take a spin yet, I'm lookin at Wed at the CLIMB Pizza Ride. Question how much air do you put in your shock I know the general rule amount of psi in relation to your weight but I have mine between 190 and 200 psi and weigh 211.

that's probably to high..

go here and download the manual for your shock...

http://www.sram.com/en/service/index.php

if I remember correctly the basic for most rock shox shocks are 2/3's pressure to weight. So if you weigh around 200 the shock should be around 160-170ish  Most shocks unless specially made have a 200lbs pressure limit.  read!!! READ!!! READ!! the manual.. can't say that enough!!

you got a pump now right?

the best way to set it is by sag.... easy to do if you have a step stool and do it next to a wall you can lean on. quick guide.

1.take out ALL air. and mark bottom of movement if not all the way to the end of the shaft.. which most are but there are a few that stop early and leave a bit sticking out so check it.
sit on bike lean you shoulder against a wall so you can stay on, depress the valve and get all air out.

2. pressure up to around 1/2-2/3 you weight and move the sweeper ring up. now measure from there to bottom out spot.

3. get on stool next to bike and slowly and gently get on the bike using the wall to stabilize and the stool to keep you from bouncing the bike. once on and stable slowly left your leg off the stool and get full weight on bike....

4. now again, SLOWLY put your foot/weight back on the stool and without bouncing the bike as much as possible get off..

5. check where the sweeper ring is.. do this a few times till you get a "sag" setting of about 1/4-1/3 of the shocks total movement now go ride..

this is the best starting point...

you will bounce the bike a tad no matter what getting on and off it so a setting in the 1/3ish area is OK.

ride the bike ..  periodically check and reset the sweeper ring.  if you bottom out once or twice a ride it's pretty much perfect. then just tweak it to what feels good to you.

Thanks for the info I thought I had it right before I had it set at about 175 and it felt nice and the sweeper ring was about a quarter of the way down. As for the pressure limit I believe the manual said 300 psi. Now the fork is a little different to set up I have been tweaking it for what feels like forever and I still can't get it to feel right.
