carrying stuff and Back pain!
« on: July 26, 2009, 10:16:31 AM »
After riding and Mt bikes for sometime now I have come to notice something strange to me.
How everyone carries stuff.
Seems everyone caries pretty much everything in a Hydro pack, or not at all. I don't get why some of you don't use a small Seat Bag for some of the regular things. Bike tool, Tube, patch kit,Point and shoot camera, Cell Phone. It just make so much more sense than putting everything in a back pack for many reasons.

  • 1. Weight is now lower
  • 2. Less weight on Back
  • 3. Easier access (don't have to fiddle with the pack to whip out the camera)
  • 4. Tool's, tubes & Patches are always there ( ever want to go for the short "just do it" ride where you don't really need the hydro pack?)

If it's weight that some are worried about, well, YOUR STILL CARRYING IT! just you have now lowered you center of gravity. Hey it also helps as a fender so you don't get sprayed as much by mud...  :D ( ok, not really much of a help but it sounds good)
Now I'm not talking those big travel bags but a small or mid sized seat bag...  If you think it's "WIND RESISTANCE" well, IT"S A MTN BIKE!! jeeesshhh    :D  ;D ;D ;D

I just keep seeing these HUGH packs people are sweating on their back and wonder why when a good portion could be lowered and not carried on your back which will make your ride that much more comfortable.    :D

Anyway, just an observation.
May your last ride not be, "your last ride"!!

Happy now?   :halo:

Gonna stuff an extra tube in there, and any other small items that will fit.

I absolutely hate carrying a camelbak and feel i ride much better without one, although once i'm riding i don't notice it at all. but the truth of the matter is my bikes usually have only one (if that) water bottle holder and most ride i go on i need more water. Plus i like carrying a tube a pump ( quickfills have failed on me in the past) and a multi tool, plus a phone as a minimum. i don't think I've seen a seat pack to handle all that yet

Yup... I have a camelbak because I drink more water than a bottle can hold.  Plus some items are larger than a pack can hold.  Athough I did have a pump on the bike before, I just rather not have it there cause I end up kicking it, or worry about losing it somehow, etc.

But, I do like a few things pointed out here about the seat pack, lower center of gravity and less on my back is good.  That's why i threw it on there yesterday, if i take even a pound off my back, that's a plus.

Llama I gotta be honest with you.  I am not a big fan of the seat post packs.  I cannot stand everything rattling around in there.  It drives me batty.  and i do not use the word batty that often.  I am not carrying a ton of stuff on my back and i believe that if you are hydrating properly that the water weight is going down fairly quickly.  But you make several very valid points.  i just had bad experiences with them.  my back hurts because my stubborn a$$ rides a hard tail.  anyways.  i still hope to see you out there, post pack and all.

Cheers

dude, get a smaller one, or  put more stuff that you carry in your hydro pack in there.. no more rattle  :)

I really only carry my phone and camera in the main pocket.. the seat bag I use has 2 little side pockets that hold my tool on one side and patch kit on other... camera and phone are in a little pouch so there is no rattle.  believe me, rattling drives me crazy!!  My work truck is all padded because I hate all the tools making that metal knocking, rattling, tinging....errrr    >:( errrr  >:( errr ....annoying noise!!
