Crank Bros. Smarty pedals:

Very happy with these.
Just put them on my FS XC rig a few weeks ago, rode 'em, tried 'em on mildly technical trails and trail features.
They're NOT the quintessential platforms by a longshot. But if you're looking for the security of more platform than the typical clipless pedals, these could be the ticket for you.
With some shoe-sole-trimming, they can be tweaked to taste for good shoe-to-platform contact and zippy entry/release.
I've tried my original EB'rs on technical trails and they suk for that IMHO.
The Smarty's, on the other hand, are a minimal-platform alternative, especially if you're looking to save weight. Like all EB'eater designs, they can't be truly adjusted for tension, however, that is their attraction. No muss, no fuss. Somehow, Crank Bros philosophy to have no tension adjustments works with their design. Again, if you're looking for broad adjustability and a big-stable platform, look elsewhere cause these certainly don't replace the classic/larger platform designs.
In a nutshell, for their intended purpose, THEY ROCK.
I give them a 9 for performance, a 10 for weight savings.
Also, they come with different color inserts (grey, or red, or blue) ...a kewl option for those with a sense of fashion/color-coordination.  ;D
The bitterness of poor workmanship remains long after the sweetness of low price is forgotten...
