Hydrapak Streamline Vs. Camelbak LOBO (1st Impression)
« on: August 09, 2010, 09:13:29 PM »
I have been using my Camelbak LOBO for a few years now and it served me well.  However, it got caught up on a tree and it ripped an exposed pocket, the lid no longer stays attached to the bladder when open and I noticed that the hose was very foggy and seemed like the inner liner was cracking.  It was time to retire the old girl - but I did not want to break the bank.

With a little help, I found the Hydrapak Streamline on sale at BlueSkyCycling.com.  A little scared of change, I was reluctant to sway from a pack that I new worked well and last me a while.  However, my wallet said give it a go.

Price: Streamline was about 1/2 the price.
Size: about Equal although the streamline "fit smaller."
Bladder: Longevity to be determined, but the measurements on the HP will come in handy if I chose to use something other then water.  The CB seems to be thicker.
Easy Of use: The CB's twist cap is another moving part that can break.  The HP is fold, slide, done - sure the slide can break off the elastic cord, but that be replaced; unlike the CB plastic connector .  The CB needs to be angled to get the water in it, the HP does not require this.  Ice would be EASIER in the HP.  The CB though stay in the bag and was no fuss.  I had to fuss with the HP a little bit to get back in order.
Bit Valves: Cannot answer.  I never had issue with my CB Valve and actually kept it just in case I don't like the HP.
Fit: This is a very biased answer, but my CB fits much better.  Why?  Well I had it for 3 years and thousands of miles.  It practically formed itself to my body and the strap are perfect.  It will take time to make the new bag into "my bag."

First impressions, I think the Streamline will be a good purchase and I will be happy I made the choice.  The price was right ($25).  The color, well its sort of lame - but if you can see it, then your behind me  :cheesy:  Time will tell, but for the CB addicts, don't be afraid to step out of the box.

Oh yeah, why do they spell it "pak?"  I don't get it.

With nearly 100 miles worth of rides, the pack is even better then first thought.

1 - The full bag opening is better and easier.  I like to add ice to my pack - especially when going for multi-laps or longer rides.  It is easier to scoop the ice and see how much is in there.

2 - I had to trim the hose.  It was simply too long and annoying.  Now I have it to an acceptable length and it is easier to use.  It does seem stiffer though then the Camelbak though.

3 - The upper bag clip seems to sit higher then the CB.  This is something I do not care for, but in truth - I do not use it to hang a multi or anything so not overly concerning.

4 - The bad is lighter then my LOBO and it can be felt.  It just feels less bulky.

My only concern and  :undecided: face is a first aid kid and how well it will fit.  While in a store, I seen a nice small pack which I will pick up when I remember where that store was - However, will the pockets be large enough?  To be determined.

An update...

I began realizes that there was a lot of "post-drip" after using the water.  It was easily solved by pushing the valve shut, but this is not exactly ideal when riding.  I sent an email back in early September to Hydrapak and did not receive a reply.  I was questioning if there was a warranty on the valve.  Over the past few months, I sort of reminded myself on rides, but never actually followed up.

Over the past few days, I have been righting some wrongs.  Today's list had Hydrapak on it.  I called their customer service and was delighted!  Really, I was in awe how easy it was.  After 2 rings, somebody picked up.  No pressing 1 for English.  No following prompts.  Nothing.  Just a guy on the other end.  I explained the situation, he said "the 90* valve is known to have problems."  I gave him my name, address and he said he'll send out regular mail today.  That easy.

It was a refreshing experience.  There is definitely something to say about good customer service!

ya,  their bite valves aren't my favorite...  I use the Nelgene valve with the magnet, the bite is better, seals better, is easier to open and close when wearing gloves, bla bla bla...

Despite the valve issue (which is likely to be fixed sooner rather then later) - your suggestion to make the change was top notch.  The bag feels lighter and filling it much easier.
