Pedals and Shoes
« on: August 27, 2010, 04:09:49 PM »
I am kinda-sorta in the market for new shoes and pedals.  Not desperate, so I can seek a good deal.

I use SPDs.  Really not interested in changing because I have no issues at all and I am not seeking to find any issues.

Shoes: Currently I have Sette Enduros.  They have lasted me quite a while and I like them - especially because of the price.  The problem is, they weight a friggin' ton.  Kinda like having a couple of cinder blocks on feet. Suggestions? OH YEAH!  I also use these on my road bike.

Pedals: M520, M540, XT ...  What is the real difference between the 3.  I currently have M520s.  - Don't know if they are good or bad, they came with the bike (well I swapped the bike to them).  I am slightly willing to upgrade to XTs (even XTRs if I can find them cheap enough), but I need a solid reason why.

Any suggestions?  Although I am not desperate, I am looking to have them broken into before 11/20 (Race day)

weight is about the only diff. in shimano's pedals,   as to shoe, go to the local shops, one thing I just wont buy online because of fit.  I've had some that are fine and others that hurt like hell...  not rolling those dice ever again...  :o

I think Brands out there on the island has some last yr's stuff..?

(pricepoint pricing & weights)

M520 = 380 grams $39.98
M540 = 352 grams $74.98
XT  = 350 Grams $109.98
XTR = 325 grams $149.98

Thom, if what you say is right (and I'm not doubting you) - the difference in weight - especially between the M540 & XTs are minimal, for $35.00 (or $17.50/gram)?  Really..?  1/18th of a lb is $75.00...  please say there is more to it... pretty please.

Anybody successfully change from SPDs to egg beaters?  Was it hard?  I am worried about muscle memory and relearning the release points.

Crank Brother SL = 266 Grams $69.98 ...

The change though will require me to buy a second pair of shoes - which sort of sucks, but is not totally out of the question.

nope, weight is pretty much it,  yaaaa they are a "tad" better in other ways, but really it's just weight,,  reason I would never bother with pretty much anything XTR, ya, it's about as good as it can get, but the price tag is ridiculous.

personally I hated the egg beaters... no adjustment of tension ( steel bone makes it so I can't "turn" my ankle enough to disengage), no platform (my foot goes numb with out a platform to distribute the pressure) and they break really easy.... Out on the island, and without all my injuries... though... probably ok?  think I'd try the speed play's first.. :undecided:

Oh, and look at Wiggle.UK and chainreaction.com for much better prices,... wiggle.UK has a better free shipping at only $75... ;D though keep the $6 priority charge,, makes it so you can trace the shipment

It took me two rides to get used to CBs.  Now I have them on 4 of my bikes including my 29er, Monster Cross, and my two fixies.

Confession:
I've got both! :cheesy: :laugh:
Love my SPD's for most stuff.
Love my CB's for other stuffs.
and yes, i've got a couple of pairs of shoes to deal with the changes.
3 types of SPD's
2 types of CB's...
I totally enjoy switching it up.
But that's just me.
The bitterness of poor workmanship remains long after the sweetness of low price is forgotten...
